When Alisha was eight years old she was given a test that defined the woman she became She sat across from the psychiatrist a middle aged black woman who was trying to prove a point looking both scared and confused The psychiatrist tried to relax her but her nerves were shot Every part of her body tingled and she was ready to go home Other psychiatrists watched her from behind glass studying her like a lab rat Alisha was a part of an experiment She just didn t know The psychiatrist put two baby dolls in front of her One was white with blond hair and blue eyes The other was black with dark eyes and kinky hair The psychiatrist asked a simple question Alisha Which one of these baby dolls is the most beautiful Alisha looked back at the woman confused and without hesitation picked up the white doll A look of concern came over her face Why would you pick this particular doll She has good hair and pretty blue eyes And why didn t you pick the other doll She has dark eyes and bad hair She s ugly Another look of despair comes over the woman s face Other black girls had been tested and gave similar answers It was time to probe deeper Which of these dolls do you feel other people would accept the most Alisha didn t even have to look back this time She picked up the white doll The psychiatrist s head drops Okay Why would people accept this doll the most Because she s white and pretty The other one is black and ugly The psychiatrist damn near tears up She sees a reflection of herself in this child growing up in a time when black wasn t beautiful The questioning continued Okay Alisha Last question Which of these dolls would you most want to be like Alisha ponders the statement for a moment but not too long She picks up the white doll again The psychiatrist looks like she is about to cry You choose this doll again Why would you most want to be like her Because white people ain t got no problems They got all the money and all the power Every woman you see on television is white White people look happy all the time That s why I want to be like them Tears fill the psychiatrist s eyes This little girl didn t love herself or the color of her skin This little girl was psychologically damaged This little girl was fed negative images of beauty and what it meant to be a strong black woman This little girl hated herself It was time for a change THE UGLY SISTER THE PREVIEW .
